View Full Version : Using BB Code, gaining levels, and changing forum color schemes

Quick guide to unique BBcode here
You probably know about your typical , [i ], and [u ] tags for bolding, italics, and underlines. Here are our new ones:
[b] or
These hide everything inside a quote box that you can click to open--or not click to keep closed.
Like so!
Really.
or
Strike through your text.
Games are all about graphics gameplay.
Creates both strikethrough and bolding. I don't know how much others will use it, but it's been great for proofreading and (especially) peer-reviewing main page posts behind the scenes.
Trimming frivolous and unnecessary words.
Pixiv (http://www.pixiv.net) is a premier Japanese art site with thousands of amazing works to peruse--at the time of this typing, I've saved and bookmarked over two thousand myself. Pixiv's rules prevent sharing the full-resolution art elsewhere, but they have an option to embed thumbnails. Not every artist will enable it, but at the bottom of many pictures you'll see an embed option. We'll take this picture as an example: http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=5446608
If you're logged in on Pixiv, you'll see this code at the bottom:
<iframe style="background:transparent;" width="380" height="168" frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://embed.pixiv.net/code.php?id=5446608_5180306e6527b76f9f6279c7306185 f8"></iframe>
From this, you copy everything after "id=" (and before the end quote) and click the Pixiv button in the editor (http://www.gf-park.com/images/misc/pixiv.ico), like so (or type it manually, of course):
5446608_5180306e6527b76f9f6279c7306185f8
And you'll end up with this:
5446608_5180306e6527b76f9f6279c7306185f8
, , and
EhhWsVX3qec
Here's how it works. Let's say your YouTube link is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45uvU1ta8WE
Take everything after "v=" and copy/paste it into the forum, then highlight it and click the first YouTube button in the editor (http://www.gf-park.com/images/misc/youtube.gif) to surround it with tags of (without spaces). At least, that's what you do if it's not HD. If it is, then simply add a "2" to each tag so that you get and .
Playlists work similarly, except that you paste in everything after "p=" instead and use the third button for tags. So, if you have this:
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=953B9BDD6B917C5B
Then [playlist]953B9BDD6B917C5B will generate this:
953B9BDD6B917C5B
From what I know, BBCode isn't sophisticated enough to allow me to add a capability for starting from a specific video in a playlist (because it requires two parameters and BBCode only supports one), so I recommend sticking to sequential and fairly short playlists instead of mega-playlists with hundreds of videos in them.
Levels
Just for fun, I added a system to give you levels and stats as if these forums were an RPG. Your post count and how long you’ve been registered with us both contribute to increasing your level.
As for the exact stat formulas, those are our secrets. :) But I will tell you this: you can’t have full HP and full MP simultaneously due to how I’ve organized this, so don’t worry about trying to max both. Consider your low MP and high HP proof of your love of healing spells, or consider your low HP and high MP a sign that you like to save spells for boss fights! ...or something.
Forum styles
We have six already and we're not opposed to adding more. You can pick your preferred style permanently in your user CP (http://www.gf-park.com/forums/usercp.php), or for as long as the cookie lasts by choosing from the footer at the bottom of any forum page. Here they are:
Clean and Straightforward
This is Prax's style and it's designed to be simple. Our mascot Octokitty doesn't look so great on it, but white and gray are simple colors many people like.
http://www.gf-park.com/images/misc/StyleCaS.png
Inviting Planet
Before any other color scheme, I came up with this one. I like blue and green, I guess, and it worked with vBulletin's default blue-shaded gradients.
http://www.gf-park.com/images/misc/StyleIP.png
Vanilla Salt Captain Falcon
In every Smash Bros. game, there's only one correct color scheme for Captain Falcon: pink and white!
http://www.gf-park.com/images/misc/StyleVSCF.png
EarthBound's Moonside
Since Prax had a style and I had two, we needed one for Canadian. It's designed after Moonside, one of the most memorable locations in EarthBound.
http://www.gf-park.com/images/misc/StyleEBM.png
Whites and Deep Blues
Kind of similar to Clean and Straightforward, except with a darker background and blue tones.
http://www.gf-park.com/images/misc/StyleMP.png
Honey Mustard Phoenix
I wanted red and yellow.

Because my polls have gotten an enormously positive reception (and we'll just ignore that most of it comes from me), I added one to this thread too. :D Select what you think should be our default color scheme--keeping in mind that it will be the one that people see before any other, and in many cases may be the only one they ever see (if they don't realize they can change colors).
Clean and Straightforward - This is our current default. Despite Prax's Octokitty not looking too great up in the corner on a white background, I kind of thought something plain would be best to start people off--at least until Rotanibor pointed out that it sort of looks like the color scheme a person would get if they never changed any default settings.
Inviting Planet - I voted for this and one other.
Vanilla Salt Captain Falcon - This is actually the color scheme I use most often, but I'm not sure others would be too fond of immediately being greeted with white and pink, especially if they didn't realize they could change things. :P
EarthBound's Moonside - I think it's cool, but not for a default. Definitely not for a default.
Whites and Deep Blues - This is the other one I voted for. It's another pretty simple color scheme, but Octokitty looks better on dark blue. My only concern is that it might make the forums look too dark-spirited and not inviting enough, but maybe that's just my sensitivity.
Honey Mustard Phoenix - I really like it, but not as a default.
I'm noticing that even when infrequent posters post something, their MP is still severely lacking. lol
What's up with that?
Are you racist against Mages, Jiggy???

Let's just say they'd need to be very, very infrequent to have filled MP bars.

but why?
I'm going to post less from now on, if that's the case!

So nobody feels too guilty about being infrequent because they at least have high MP stats. :3

they should feel too guilty about being infrequent. :3

It takes MP to make posts on a message board! What, do you think posting is free? There's always a cost. :P
So nobody feels too guilty about being infrequent because they at least have high MP stats. :3
NOBODY has high MP stats~ that was my whole point :p
IamCanadian: what if you can spend some HP on threads made, and MP on posts made?
Isn't there a move like that in RPGs, where the Mage diverts attacks that effect HP, to instead effect MP?
Reverse it in this case! hehe

Please make a delicious strawberry & creme scheme~I'll call it Merit Style and get on it, but first, what do you have in mind here? Red and white, pink and white, red and peach, pink and white and peach, red and pink and white and peach... I could interpret this in a lot of ways. :P
I guess I could change the formula at some point. :3
no need to overhaul it completely.
Just tweak it a bit so that ppl don't ALWAYS have low MP. ^_~
Only the ones who vanish have low MP.
(hmmm.. which actually makes it easy to detect who vanished.. haha)

Added notes on Pixiv code and the new playlist code.
And... I haven't added new forum colors yet. Merit-badge, can you just take a screenshot, change the colors to kind of what you want, and show me? There might be a few things you'd think of in a graphics program that aren't possible in CSS (or at least not CSS as vBulletin is laid out), but overall looking around Inviting Planet should give you a near-perfect idea of what I can and can't change. (Inviting Planet is best because I homogenized the other themes a bit more--for example, in most other themes, the bar above the poll at the top of this window is the same color as the bar below the poll.)
1. hoping to see user names of mods and admins highlighted in pink once again.
That was a nice touch, and it gives members a little security and confidence knowing someone is around to moderate.
It's the simple things, man. ^_~
2. something should be done about the outrageous Levels and Stats reflected in the PM box..
3. MP still needs to be tweaked a bit, so that not EVERYONE is punished for contributing posts/threads. We don't want to award members who vanish for weeks at a time, with better stats that members who stick around.

1. I thought it would just needlessly intimidate people and I don't like being intimidating, but okay, I'll get on adding it back.
2. I've said this before, but right now I don't understand why those stats are even being pulled up in PMs at all--the code doesn't indicate that they should be, unless I'm looking in the wrong section. This is what happens when your site owner knows practically nothing about site coding, but I'm looking into some tutorials. When I can fix it, I'll fix it...
3. But then we'd all have full HP and MP and it would look boring. :( Even as-is, I'm worried I'm way too generous on HP since you all have to do to keep it full is maintain a post rate of more than 0.789 per day.

1. You're wrong. Nobody was/is intimidated whatsoever. I mean, the color is PINK for goodness sakes.
2. take your time. Maybe just add it to the "to-do" list for the future.
3. ............ i said to just "tweak" it a tad. ^_~

If I change the style, it desappears every time I log out =S
So I still use Clean & Straightforward...

Hey, Jiggs~ Could you maybe add youtube wrap CODE tags to the options?
A lot of message boards seem to have them now, so might as well.

Edit: I've also added an code, though I didn't add it to the OP since I don't think many people will find it useful. It basically disables any BBCode inside it, so that we can show how to use things without the code actually kicking in, e.g.:

I've added a code that acts exactly like [hide] except that it doesn't automatically dump in the "Spoiler for" text, e.g.:
[hide=Yay, it says what I want to say]!!!
ex nihilo nihil fit
vs.
!!!
But I don't want that word "spoiler" there when I'm not even spoiling anything in this box. :|
I'm actually half-inclined to think that when we make the switch, I could just replace [hide] with [hide] and then replace [spoiler] with [hide]...
does gaining EXP increase at a slower pace at the higher LEVELs?Yes.

So... why don't you cast poison on everyone and get them to slowly and painfully die unless they get on and post something in order to heal themselves? (Oh gosh, I really have nothing useful to say... If that is done I'm so gonna die)
