View Full Version : Forum purpose: making a game community the (semi-)democratic way.

Originally I was planning on a kind of gaming forum counter-culture, with every usual expectation subverted: no console wars, no flaming, no meme-spamming, no throngs of males framing everything into random sexual contexts.

You know, a nice place for discussion.

I thought it should be possible, at least theoretically, for one all-purpose gaming forum somewhere to portray gamer culture in a moderately mature and sensible light. (Maybe I'm just not cynical enough about humanity? I like to think I am, though. :P) Prax's cute Octokitty logo symbolizes my ideals.

And maybe we'll still go my way--but only if people say we should.

So what would you like here on GF Park? We have a blank slate to build from the ground up here, so let's talk. My only rule: we're not going to be exactly the kind of game forum that anybody can find anywhere. We won't be GameFAQs, we won't be IGN, we won't be NeoGAF, and so on--no point to it when they're already out there and will continue being out there. We're also not having signatures, and we're not allowing certain profanity or open sex talk.

Anything else is up for discussion, and so we have this forum to talk it over. I won't be making such serious decisions purely by force and number of votes (though they do help), so please give your reasoning on any topics you find especially important. :)

And if any topics you want to discuss don't have threads yet, feel free to start them. Memes, off-topic discussions, gamer civilians in console wars, smilies, or any other related subjects: what would you like?

Just for the record, the mods and admins do have their own opinions--we're just holding back from giving them yet because we don't want to intimidate other potential posters with sheer mod force or whatever anyone might be scared of. :P But do feel free to post meanwhile.

Additionally, posting as a guest is now open; after all, pure feedback can be almost as valuable as outright registrations.

I'll admit I only signed up for this forum in an attempt to catch up with you, Jiggy. But if needed, I will contribute whatever intelligence I have.

This is what greets non-members who stumble upon the message board:

Welcome to GF Park forums. Gaming Discussion is open, albeit very small; please feel free to register and post. :)
We're still in the process of ironing out our rules and guidelines, and we'd appreciate your input if you'd be kind enough to share it with us.

I'm sure some of that could be amended or reworded.

Oh, great point. That's from the site's beginnings and I kind of forgot about it since I sure never see it on my end due to always being logged in... amending it now.

Edit: New message:

Welcome to GF Park. We're something of a crazy bunch, but you're in the right place if you like a dash of fun with your info and discussion! Please feel free to register and post.

There are no signatures. I don't know how did I manage NOT to notice it before.
ITS GENIUS!

As a personal note, I tend not to take forums very seriously as a place for discussion unless they are heavily moderated. On the other side, forums that are not heavily moderated do serve their particular purpose and tend to be more relaxed places to chat.

oh, we tried Signatures about three weeks ago, and it was shot down pretty unanimously.

Refer to the "TWEWY Pins" thread.
