http://i27.tinypic.com/wiaclf.jpg
I love my DS!
As most of you know, I'm a DS collector.
Thanks to the abundance of quality software (some of which is stuck in Japan), there's a lot to enjoy.
The point of this thread is to review DS games in my collection (145 games and counting (http://www.gf-park.com/forums/showpost.php?p=391&postcount=3)).
PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS regarding the game being reviewed, and/or the review itself~ thanks! ^^

Great thread for a great system! And super-concise reviews are always cool; I don't see too many of them around. Your scoring system seems a little unintuitive, though; I really wouldn't associate a "C" with a game that's nearly unplayable if I didn't read your legend first. :P

I ment to post this in the DS Collection thread earlier but it slipped my mind. Anyways, if you really like Band Bros that much, you NEED to get Band Bros DX. It entirely blows the first Band Bros out of the water, and I really loved the original.
Also if I wanted to post my own mini-reviews in this thread, would you mind? I'd keep it DS related and in the same general format you are making your reviews in. (though I'd probably adopt a different ratings system to be honest)

I want this thread to be for my reviews of DS games only, with the rating system in tact ^^
As for Band Bros. DX, I'm fully aware of all the DS games out there. That's another one on my list, certainly~
Jiggy, the rating system I'm using is kind of similar to the format of Ikaruga, Front Mission 3, ect.

Challenge (S)
-- Puyo titles are the most deceptively-difficult puzzlers to playNo kidding. I'm not that great at puzzle games anyway--or at least not puzzle games that aren't Tetris, Yosumin, Meteos, or Dr. Mario, and I'm not very exceptional at those either--but I tried Kirby's Avalanche several years ago and all I remember is getting destroyed over and over by the computer. :P

yea, anybody can play Puyo Puyo, but to be good at it takes a lot more skill than most puzzle games.
It's a big reason why I love the games, because you can always learn some new moves/strategies no matter how adept you are.

Hive I couldn't tell by your last post, do you mind if I do my own DS mini review in this thread? I'll keep everything exactly as you have it here with the same silly reviewscores as well!
yes i mind. lol
Why don't you make a separate thread for games other than from DS.

Yea, i know. I'm specifically reviewing games in my collection in this thread. It's called "HIVE'S Romancing DS Thread".
You should make a "Rotan's Romancing 360 Thread". lol

But I don't want to review 360 games. ):
Maybe I'll make my own DS review thread and it will blow your DS review thread out of the water! What about them apples?!

haha poor 360..
You should just make a thread for reviewing games from ALL platforms! You have a ton on your shelf to start with.
Actually, I would love to read your reviews of the SNES and Playstation games you have in your collection~ ^^

Ewwww PlayStation.
SNES is cool though. I'll make a retro game thread or something. WHERE ANYBODY CAN POST THEIR OWN MINI REVIEW!
Good work on this thread though. You're doing a good enough job I don't think you need anybody elses help anyways.

Normally I wouldn't be too fond of a thread that's a one-person show, but Hive owns every DS game ever made and is an utter machine at producing these mini-reviews, so it works out in this particular exceptional case.

Game-play (A+)
-- Plays similar to Aria of Sorrow for GBA (Soul-collecting), while unlocking/playing Julius Mode is an even greater experience than normal mode.I've always wondered why they consistently save the very best for after you've already beaten the game. Julius and Alucard were more fun than Soma, Richter and Maria were more fun than Jonathan and Charlotte, and while Shanoa and Albus are arguable either way, at very least her hard mode is better than her normal.

http://i32.tinypic.com/29e3taf.jpg The soundtrack is just as upbeat and cute as everything else in the game.I wasn't that impressed with SPP's soundtrack--actually, it's just about the only thing in the game I was disappointed with, really not enjoyable enough for a platformer in the Mario series. Not that I'm disagreeing about it being upbeat and cute, though, and I guess a score of "good" is still what I'd give it on your scale.

before Arkanoid DS, I had only played the NES version (released in 1986).
No doubt the arcade/NES versions are better. Especially in terms of stage-design.
To be honest, I really enjoyed my time spent with Arkanoid DS.
The game may have gotten a Mediocre overall score, but there are some charming things packed inside that make it worth my time.
The best part about it is its OST, no doubt.
I'll continue to play it until a better version is released.

I don't know, I think having so much vertical space hurt the pace. Felt too slow for my taste.
I didn't really mind the controls, though, since I've never played Arkanoid on anything except a d-pad.
I'm not sure why I liked it more at the time, other than maybe not yet having played the similar-and-better DX-Ball.
Arkanoid has boss battles and DX-Ball doesn't. So I prefer Arkanoid. :3
I don't know, I think having so much vertical space hurt the pace. Felt too slow for my taste.
too slow? Can you explain what you mean?
Because having that vertical space made sure that wall-hits (and therefore brick-hits) were more frequent.
And each brick you hit makes your ball move faster.
It made it more frantic, at times.
I think why it felt so slow for you is because the gameplay was boring, with little incentive to continue.

It just felt that with the vertical space, I was spending more time just hanging around waiting for the ball to come back to the bottom screen so I could hit again. Additionally, the narrower bricks (they're 1x1 instead of 2x1 like in most Arkanoids) and extra space made those scenarios where you have to hit that last solitary block more annoying than usual.

- Several difficulty levels open up as you progress
- Achieving the highest rank for each song (S) provides a great challengeEven beating some of the Elite Beat Agents songs at all must be right up there with the most intense gaming experiences I've ever had--and the overall game is simply phenomenal. Even though I wouldn't listen to most of its music outside of a gameplay context and don't like the soundtrack in general, I don't dislike it, and EBA's raw no-fluff gameplay is simply so addicting in its simplicity and immediacy (courtesy of the touch screen), and simultaneously so challenging--a game element I don't find nearly often enough--that the entire experience had no trouble making my top twenty or even my top fifteen games of all time. A masterpiece.

yea, I totally see what you mean now~ It absolutely shouldn't have been so narrow. Wondering why they did that.. >_>
Can't wait until they come up with a new edition! I love the game mechanics, and Nervous Brickdown is overrated..

You know, I think a lot of people underestimate how difficult it must have been to make those beat maps in the games so pitch-perfect. By contrast, try this free game of Osu, which I think Rotanibor was the first to link me to:
http://osu.ppy.sh/
Now, to an extent this game could never be full-on flawless like Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents, because a mouse doesn't feel as immediate as a touch screen. Still, Osu is trying and fans have made playable version of nearly any song you could want--and certainly I've picked up tons of themes I like. Still, so often the creators go astray from solid design principles and do wild things like V-shaped slider beats with part of the V overlapping itself so it's difficult to figure out where your cursor's supposed to be--and I don't find it creative or fun, just obtuse. It drags down the entire experience, especially when it plagues so many beat maps.
Even when outright flaws aren't in the picture, it's rare that fan creators so carefully listen to the rises and falls--the peaks and valleys, the crests and crevices--of the music and then synchronize their beat maps with them as well as iNiS. Not that I could do it either without putting in ludicrous time, of course, but with Elite Beat Agents some of the beat maps still stand in my memory even though it's been months or maybe over a year since I last played them.
The ascending triangle-shaped patterns in Makes No Difference that fit perfectly with the (mostly) single-syllable staccato notes and their , the ascending wavy line in September that conveys the singers' wavering and continuous voices, Without A Fight's back-and-forth patterns that established the firmness and solidarity of the sung words' underlying messages... Synergy like this is vital to any game, I think, but even moreso with rhythm games. You can't just place beats randomly about the screen and expect people--or at least not people like me--to not notice when there's a kind of discontinuity or disharmony between what the music conveys and what the player is doing.

I contest that the replay and presentation scores on your EBA review are too low. I'd probably 5 star both of them.
The soundtrack worked within the context of the game, and did have a few legitimately good songs in it. Though I can see why some people wouldn't like it for the most part.
Also I'd say that Osu while an intresting idea and admiralable effort, it seems to completely miss the purpose of Ouendan. Namely due to the lack of a touch screen. The tapping/drumming feeling was the main reason the game felt so engaging from the moment you've picked it up.
Adding to that, from a few of the videos I've seen of levels, the creators really don't get the basic design ideas presented in Ouendan/EBA. They somehow seem to think that filling the entire screen with beats all lined up in a row is supposed to be challenging, or even creative. Other common problems I've noticed hiding about 24 different beats behind one another, with absolutely no way to tell how many times you should be hitting them, and placing beats all the way across the screen from where the last beat was placed. Actually, the reason I don't like the first Ouendan as much as the others is because it occasionally has some of these problems. Thankfully they learned from their mistakes.
The final problem would be the terrible presentation. The charming stories were one of the big things that got me to keep playing on my original playthrough. From what I've seen here, its embarrasing montages combined with terrible J-pop. Say what you will about the music in EBA outside of the game, but in the context of the game they WERE fun.
I contest that the replay and presentation scores on your EBA review are too low. I'd probably 5 star both of them.
On what terms? I agree that the presentation score was too low, and adjusted it (Great).
But why should replay be higher?

The single core value of the 'replay value' catagory is how replayable it is, and I happened to replay this game to a point that would justify giving it a 5 out of 5 in said catagory.

Have you played Starfy 5 yet? I'm curious how you think it stacks up to others in the series since I can't say I liked it much.
I haven't played it.
All I can tell you is that Starfy 4 was a lot of fun for me.
A lot of detail went into the level design and visuals, so it was hard to put down.
And some levels are actually a bit challenging.
Starfy 5 looks a bit sketchy, imo.
After a brief discussion with Jiggy regarding Hotel Dusk's box cover, it got me thinking about just how smart the overall presentation was for that game.
Therefore, I've gone ahead and adjusted the Presentation score (http://www.gf-park.com/forums/showpost.php?p=562&postcount=12) from Great to Outstanding.
I really hate to retro-actively adjust review scores like that, but it finally hit me that I was unfair.
And I feel so stupid, because it's really plain and obvious now, that Hotel Dusk had one of the best presentations of any portable game to date.
My mistake.

Does Yosumin DS save your progress in the campaign or other modes? As much as I love the XBLA version (and even the Flash version), actually, my one major complaint is that it doesn't--and it's such a shame. I'm not someone who slings around the word "epic," but on level 50 I couldn't get it out of my head!
Yosumin in space! Five Yosumin (full-screen clears) needed in one round! Super Yosumin music! Not to knock on the addictive intellectual feel of pattern recognition, but in terms of pure excitement, I don't think I've ever felt more energy from a puzzle game this side of Meteos' amazing title screen music. And yet it takes a couple hours to reach that level, so I won't be playing it too often. It honestly hurts. :(
Edit: Speaking of Meteos' title music, I don't see it anywhere on YouTube. When I get back, I guess I know one thing I have to do!
Does Yosumin DS save your progress in the campaign or other modes?
Yep, it saves everything ^^
wow, the XBLA version does sound interesting..

I think you're a bit harsh on Metal Slug 7's replayability since the Combat School lasted me for a long time. Then again, I'm bad at Metal Slug games, so it took me ages to make any kind of progress in it.
Other than that, I pretty much agree with your assessment. It's a good game, and I'd take it over Metal Slugs 4 and 6, but below the rest of the series.

Well, seven levels is above average for a Metal Slug game, honestly. :P And Combat School kept me coming back for a while, even though you don't really get anything for it except for your instructor gradually falling in love with you.

Still, at least the quality of the gameplay is above average for the series post-Metal Slug 3.

I'll be honest: you just can't sell me a $30 game with seven levels unless those levels are each half an hour long. Competition in similar genres is so tight--from both new games with more levels and classic re-releases with prices 66% lower (or more!)--that I create whole mental blocks around the idea of paying so much.
But since Metal Slug 7 is eventually coming to XBLA for presumably a lower price, there's always a possibility I'll buy it there. I do really like the characters' looks, and the number of them is another plus.

Big Brain Academy or Tetris DS. BBA isn't that great as a single-player experience, but I think it's a highly underrated multiplayer game--lots of quick thinking, definitely a very swift and reaction-based game. It's almost a shame that it has "Brain" in the name since I think a lot of people who played one of the Brain Age games will automatically write it off for being similar when it isn't at all.
Meanwhile, Tetris DS is one of my all-time top games and my favorite version of Tetris. Such wonderful music.
I'll go ahead and review Electroplankton next ^^
Jiggy: Tetris DS would have been my favorite version, if not for the 'unlimited spin' feature.
Friends of mine would pick up the game for the first time (or first time in years) and breeze through the highest levels by taking advantage of unlimited spin~

No Dragon Quest IV? Princess Tsarevna PRINCESS Alena's going to kick down her wall, march over to your wall, kick that down too, and dish out some critical hits. ;P
Anyway, I'm a little curious about what your Replay now that I see your Electroplankton and Big Brain Academy scores so close together--I was pretty sure you were factoring the number of modes and options into your final grades, which would explain Electroplankton's ranking, but Big Brain Academy doesn't have any great amount of options either. Is it elevated by multiplayer?

Multiplayer helps Replay a lot, usually.
But I also factor in the player's drive to want to continue a game that has limited variety in the gameplay.
Know what I mean?
Big Brain Academy tries really well to get the player to earn higher scores and medals.
There are no achievements or earnings in Electroplankton,
and so Replay relies too much on the player's level of interest..
Electroplankton: no multiplayer, plenty of modes but limited variety in the gameplay
Big Brain Academy: 8-players, challenge settings, achievement medals, decent variety in puzzles

I've debated whether I should get Tetris WiiWare or Tetris DS. While I could technically take Tetris DS with me and that suits my lifestyle more, I hardly take my DS with me becuase it's too large. The retro Nintendo stuff in the DS one is a big plus though.

Nah, not many people carry a backpack into the office environment. I have to wear slacks at work and the DS feel like a squeezed a brick into my pocket.
Gameboy Micro is still my favorite handheld for this aspect alone. I'm also getting a PSP Go! mainly for its size (hopefully it's not too thick).
It might not seem like a big issue to some of you, but it is to me. I think a handheld should be intended to give you gaming on the go. Something like a cell phone that you don't mind slipping in your pocket and have with you at all times so no matter what situations you run into throughout the day, it's there to play. I find if I take my DS or PSP anywhere I have to stop that morning and think "hmmm, am I really going to play this today?" and then decide if I'd play it enough to warrant lugging it around the entire day. With my GB Micro that was never an issue, I never thought twice about taking it. And because of that it became my most played handheld ever.

I understand. ^^
Well, perhaps part of the problem is that you feel awkward being seen with the DS in public (?).
Which is too bad, because tons of perfectly regular people use their DS's during class-breaks or at the University when they feel like.
I can't tell you how many times a teacher, student, or colleague has inquired about my DS! ^o^

Could you do Picross DS? Video games or otherwise, puzzles are something of a love/hate affair with me and grid-based stuff definitely falls into the pattern. For example, I like Sudoku and those logic puzzles with grids (http://www.braingle.com/brainteasers/27770/cats-in-spring.html), but crosswords not so much. I'm not sure where Picross would fit in there.

Sure.
Picross is also a logic puzzle game, in the same vain as Sudoku.
As far as Paper & Pencil puzzles go, Picross and Slitherlink are my favorites.
Sudoku is probably not even in my top 10.. it's very overrated since there is little variation to the puzzles.

・Triggering the next scene may perplex players during cross-examinations
・Making the right choices can be unintuitive, resulting in some trial by error
・Health bar will earn you a game over when depleted
