View Full Version : Gimmi some smilies

I won't be satisfied until I can fill my posts with smilies that are shooting guns or going Super Saiyan.

The smiley collections here aren't too bad (http://www.big-boards.com/smileys.php#), so I'll put up a poll in a moment.

Once we have a decent-sized userbase, I don't know if they'll all support smilies in the end, but I guess it shouldn't matter much to at least start off with the option.

as long as they aren't obnoxious like below, smilies can add some nice character to a forum.

Oh I just noticed a poll went up. In that link you posted, I actually kind of like Basic Set 1 (Yellow). Its not a set I see typically around on forums, and it doesn't look too retarded. Like I said before, starting off with a simple set like that, then adding in a few choice ones is good. Only problem with 'basic set 1' I can see, is if you do add in some more, the smilies may not match eachother very well.

smilies are a bit obnoxious, so I'd like to see a limited amount of them.

The mega man one is fantastic, though!

I kind of hate smilies.. a lot! (I'm a fan of pure text smilies)

So I'd rather they be very limited.. and definitely not automatic every time I type " :) ".

So.. I say.. 3 smilies max per post! I am not sure what you would need more.

Rotanibor
07-05-2009, 08:48 PM
I agree with typing :) and getting a smilie is annoying. Its easy enough to change that and make it something like  to get a smiling smilie.

3 smilies seems like a little underdoing it if someone ends up making some huge mega post that would be understandable if they had more then 3 smilies. Something like 5 to 10 seems a bit more reasonable.

Wonder if there would be a way to determine the maximum number of graphical smilies based on word count. Like, you only get three smilies if you're only typing ten words, but several paragraphs would get more smilies to use.

(We're using 3.8+ right now, but many older plugins should still work too.)

I looked for a couple minutes and didn't find anything, so I won't go any further; this is really low on my priority list compared to most things I could theoretically be improving, though that's not to say it's totally unimportant. Anyone else is welcome to look, though, but if nothing else the 5-10 max could be a good compromise and we could just discourage random spamming.

I'd say a small mix of video-game related, and basic smileys. We need a laughing, crying, and angry smiley at least. I've always liked the one red smiley shaking his fist defiantly.

Also, might I suggest cruising over to the D&D boards and sampling their smiley buffet? Some of their smiley are really cool, ranging from flinging fireballs, and swashbuckling duellists.

Maybe I just find more instances when these smileys would be appropriate than the average person does. *shrugs*

haha, they're not bad, but this forum doesn't want to get cluttered with obnoxious icons/smileys, ya know?

Gotta keep it simple~

True. Believe it or not, the D&D boards have dozens of smileys to choose from, but rarely do they ever seem obtrusive. The moderation, as well as the climate of discussion, seem to help keep the useless spamming down to a minimum.

It was just a suggestion though. They don't have to be the ones I posted, or even anything at all, though if anything, I would like more game-y ones like the running Metbot.

A laughing smile, an actual smile, and maybe a frown are all any forum should need. Anything else really becomes obtrusive and is just there for itself.

:metool

I do love that Metool though.

I think it's about time to get some smileys in here.
All I'm asking for is the "laughing" smiley that GAF uses (but yellow, not blue).

This is so I can laugh at all of you more effectively and efficiently.

If I knew where to find a laughing Kefka sprite, I'd implement it--but I don't, so I'll see what I can dig up. I found a lot of smileys for someone else once, so if I can just figure out where I went, it shouldn't take too long. :metool

Okay, Hive, if yellow laughing faces like the turquoise one exist, then I sure haven't found them, so which do you want?

looking at this (http://www.gsarchives.net/index2.php?category=all&system=nds&game=world_ends_with_you&type=sprites&level0=non-animated&level1=pins) page of gsarchives, and I'd like GF to do something with the TWEWY pins.
Maybe use them as rewards for site achievements! haha

Jiggy
02-04-2010, 02:46 AM
Good news: Wow, those TWEWY pins are really cool.
Bad news: Building the reward system you're thinking of is way beyond my current skill level.
Good news: Someone else has already created a reward system for easy use after a quick download (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=196244&highlight=awards).
Bad news: My vBulletin license is expired and I'm not allowed to download it unless I spend $175 to upgrade to vBulletin 4.

Anyway, will add the laughing smiley tomorrow and maybe a couple others if I find any I like.

??? If we need to start a yearly donations thread, let me know.

Hive

I'm going to figure out a way we can use those pins to reward members.

BRAINSTORM:
1. As an incentive, pins are earned after meeting certain objectives on the message board.
2. Pins go directly into a member's signature.
3. Admins, by default, have their own special pin, as do Mods and Sub-Mods.
4. ???

Jiggy
02-05-2010, 11:30 AM
Hmm... well, I do think there's a way to disallow user-controlled signatures while still letting admins change them, but I'm not sure if just normal mods can edit signatures... I believe they can, though. I'll look into what settings I can tweak when I get the chance today or tomorrow. :salsa

Edit: Wait a second. Why not put them in user titles instead?

Hive
02-05-2010, 11:42 AM
that's okay, but what if they've earned a LOT of pins?
they may not fit (?)

Jiggy
02-05-2010, 12:33 PM
Line breaks can be used--I tested that once by giving Prax-o like three different user titles. :metool

And the pins are 26 pixels wide and the avatar box has to be at least 135 or so (because the avatars themselves are 120 and yet there's still space off to the right), so a person would need six of them before needing two lines--or eleven before hitting three lines, and so on.

sounds good, but could you try it out, so I can see what that looks like?
Put a couple of those pins in my user title.

once we get this figured out, I'll go ahead and start a thread for a new incentive-based pin rewards!!! ^^

Maybe it would look better under the posts.

yea, he understands.
that's why i just told him to test it out with my user title.

If the pins are used for the signiture, it would just be in a straight line, so not much space is taken up.
It'll be along the same level as the EDIT and QUOTE buttons.

I forwarded this to Jiggy's PM box:

http://i46.tinypic.com/slgp46.gif

I cut the sea-green shadow out because it kinda made the sprite a bit too large relative to the other Smileys.
There's also no way to simply shrink the .gif without it looking really bad.
So this may be the best way to go, because i DO love the .gif. ^^

Well, right now I think all three of our animated smilies would be awful-looking if they stood still--the animation gives them life, I think. So I'd try to aim for moving ones, myself.

Okay, how about this: if we can have at least one good non-animated smiley for every two animated smilies, we can keep the Pangya one? It does kind of stick out since it's not moving, but if there were others like it then I don't think it would look as strange as it does...

Incidentally, can anyone think of even a potential use for these:

I saw them and just kind of wrote them off because I couldn't imagine when they'd be used, but maybe others feel differently. :metool
